World Smile Day is celebrated every year on the first Friday of October, since Harvey Ball was declared a World Smile Day. Smileys have existed since 1998, when they were first created as an internet invention. A smiley is a small computerized icon which flashes and smiles when activated. Since then, there have been several models of the happy little faces, symbolizing many other human emotions, including happiness, surprise, fear and sadness.
In modern-day texting and social networking, smileys are used to express feelings on a phone or an internet forum on a laptop. Initially, the smileys symbolized only one emotion: sadness. Sadness was represented by a different icon called a frowny face. Therefore, for example, if someone wanted to say “I’m sad”, they would type in “sad” smileys instead of “I’m smiling”.

History of World Smile Day
The concept for World Smile Day was launched inositol in 1998. It was first thought that this day should be held in the town that hosted the marathon; however, when it was decided that the location for the event should be the town of Worcester, this was chosen. Worchester is the largest city on the east coast of the United Kingdom. The area is known for the Exeter Racecourse race course and the Wollaston community. The community as a whole has a lot of local businesses and shops.
A new version of Smileys created for World Smile Day shows different icons for all emotions: happiness, sadness, fear and anticipation. The latest Worcester city smartphone, smiley, also known as the MySSD Phone Smiley, is available in Massachusetts. The MySSD is available in many states across America, where a similar program has already been implemented. This makes it a global event.
World Smile Day Celebrations
In recent years, a great deal of interest has been shown in World Smile Day. Several companies have become involved with the cause. The Worcester corporation was one of those that became a sponsor of this unique celebration. On the first Friday of October, we could do the enjoying steps-
- Do a random act of kindness for someone.
- Use a smiley face emoji on every text you send.
- Spread cheer by handing out smiley face stickers.
- Give a smile to everyone you come across.
- Tell someone a funny joke.
World Smile Day is also promoted by raising funds and awareness of dental problems, such as tooth decay and gum disease. Using the pennies symbol, people can purchase the World Smile toy for needy children. There is also a website with additional information on World Smile Day. This website offers a variety of fun facts and fun activities related to the World Smile Day celebration.
