World Animal Day was founded in 1925 with the vision of creating awareness of cruelty to animals and promoting greater compassion and respect for animals through education and publicity. The goal is to end animal abuse and encourage responsible conservation and use of wildlife. World Wildlife Day will be celebrated in 2024 under the theme “Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet” to highlight the central role of forests, forest species and ecosystem services in sustaining the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people globally.

World Animal Day History

Cynologist Heinrich Zimmermann originated World Animal Day. He organized World Animal Day on March 24 1925, at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany. Over 5,000 people attended this first event. The World Society created World Animal Day to prevent animal cruelty or WSPCA. The mission statement of World Animal Day is “To educate people about the responsibility of owning a pet and how that responsibility affects the lives of animals and their habitats.”

Through the World Animal Day Celebration, an international network of volunteers leads a massive effort to reduce the numbers of stray, abandoned, neglected and abused animals across the globe. In addition to celebrating World Animal Day each year, many other activities are planned, including fundraising and fundraisers. These events are celebrated worldwide, with millions of people joining in to help.

  • October 4 is the Feast Day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology and animals.
  • On this day,  90 ambassadors from more than 70 countries, from Andorra and Australia to the United States and Zimbabwe, will meet to celebrate.
  • 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide annually; each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats). Support the ASPCA in helping homeless animals.
  • Scientists have estimated that there is a total of 8.7 million animal species living on Earth, which means there are 7.5 million species yet to be discovered.

The theme of World Animal Day is “Everywhere Love and Science Unite”. Although Australia does not have a national government or an official organization that officially declares World Animal Day, many organizations and individuals promote the day using the World Animal Day logo, slogans, colours, and signs. Australia is proud to stand up for animal rights and join the worldwide campaign for World Animal Day. As the world’s largest uniting country, Australia wants to do whatever it can to support the mission of World Animal Day. World Animal Day is celebrated every year in October.
