Cynologist Heinrich Zimmermann originated World Animal Day. He organized World Animal Day on March 24 1925, at the Sports Palace in Berlin, Germany. Over 5,000 people attended this first event. The World Society created World Animal Day to prevent animal cruelty or WSPCA. The mission statement of World Animal Day is “To educate people about the responsibility of owning a pet and how that responsibility affects the lives of animals and their habitats.”
Through the World Animal Day Celebration, an international network of volunteers leads a massive effort to reduce the numbers of stray, abandoned, neglected and abused animals across the globe. In addition to celebrating World Animal Day each year, many other activities are planned, including fundraising and fundraisers.
