International Mother Language Day 2022: 21 February- Theme, Activities & Significance

About 7.5 hundred Crores people in the world love to speak their mother tongue. Humans are the best creatures on earth. As the best creature in creation, only human beings can share different theories and ideas with each other about International Mother Language Day. Think about it – if there was no language in the world, would you be able to read this content today? Certainly not. Because at birth a child is not born with any language in his mouth.

Every member of the world learns the language from his mother. Did you know that people have struggled and given their lives for language? Bangladesh is a country that has fought and given its life for the Bengali language. If you better celebrate the event by honor to them who significance their life for mother language. We should observe the day not only for historical but also with respect to mother. So, let’s start to know about the important day.

History of Mother Language Day

 Bangladesh gained independence in 1971, but the main source of that independence was the language movement of 1952. East Pakistan is now Bangladesh and West Pakistan is now Pakistan. On the one hand, the demand for making Bengali the state language on the basis of the majority of East Pakistan, and on the other hand, the demand of the then government of Pakistan to make Urdu, the minority language, the state language.

All the students gathered on 21st February 1952 to demand that Bengali be made the state language, but the Pakistani government allowed Yahya Khan to open fire on the students’ procession. The fires of the liberation war of Bangladesh have been burning ever since and at one point in 1971 after the crowning of East Pakistan i.e. Bangladesh independence In its continuation, the United Nations has been observing February 21 as International Mother Language Day since 2000.

The theme for International Mother Language Day 2021 is “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society”.

Bangladesh and Mother Language Day

Everyone needs to respect their mother tongue, be it Bengali, English, Arabic, Persian, Portuguese, and others. If you respect the language, you respect your mother. And surely mother is one of the best people in the world. Surrounded by India and bordered by Myanmar, Bangladesh struggled for language and set the world on fire.

Today, in its continuation, the 21st of February is celebrated as International Mother Language Day. Celebrating International Mother Language Day from 2000 till today, I first think of Bangladesh. So Mother’s Day and Bangladesh are like a coin.

Why do we celebrate on February 21?

International Mother Language Day is successfully observed in 193 countries of the United Nations every year. International Mother Language Day is celebrated on the 21st of February every year to honor the mother tongue and to present one’s language to the world. One of the most important means of human life. It is not possible for a single person to do all the work in the world, and for that people have to cooperate with people. That is to say, this day needs to be celebrated a little differently to respect the language.

Through the celebration of International Mother Language Day, all people, irrespective of race, religion, and caste, dream of coming to the world to come. Therefore, every year the United Nations and the members of the United Nations celebrate the 21st of February as International Mother Language Day through various activities.

What Do People Do?

Collecting flowers for the celebration of International Mother Language Day, various Shaheed Minar is offered. Every martyr’s minaret is decorated with flowers to bless the souls of the martyrs who gave their lives for the language. On the morning of 21st February, the martyrs were honored with flowers at the Shaheed Minar.
