History of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
History is an essential part of promoting a day or good event. You may hear the name Malala Yousufzi, who earned Novel Peace Price for violence against children. The Day was established based on the three Mirabal sisters who were killed in 1960. For their activities for women Latin American & Caribbean, Feminine Encuentros marked the Day to observe to awaken people about violence against women.
The Beijing Declaration promotes the Day on 25 November 2014. UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said: “In 1995, nearly 20 years ago, 189 governments came together in Beijing. They adopted a Platform for Action that spelled out key strategies to end violence against women, empower women, and achieve gender equality. … The promises from 20 years ago are still valid today. Together, we must make 2015 the year that marks the beginning of the end of gender inequality. Now is the time for action.”
After that, Un Secretary-General- Ban Ki-Moon took action against violence. Nowadays, The UN Women observes and offers to celebrate the Day globally as a National Day for eliminating Violence Against Women.
